German: About a Girl

Today we were brought with our German class to the Irish Film Institute to watch a German film called About a Girl. About a Girl is a romantic comedy about a teenage girl with an obsession for death. During adolescence, she feels that the world is collapsing around her. Her parents are divorced, she hates her Mam's new boyfriend, and shes getting tired of her best friend who cares more about her appearance then their friendship.

Following a failed suicide attempt involving a hairdryer and a bath of water, we follow her journey as she falls in love with a strange boy in her class and begins to see the world in a different light while remaining with her obsession with death.

I really enjoyed the movie, it was a bit strange and made you feel uncomfortable at times, however it deals with death in such a manner that it almost doesn't seem as bad as it actually it is. The directors shoot scenes which almost mock death and make fun of suicide, which often has you lolling and then wondering if you should've laughed at it or not. It also has a really good soundtrack.

After we went to see the film we got a chance to grab food and go for a walk around town. It was a good day overall!
